While some passengers are just happy to have a balcony or a window, cruise lines are increasingly catering to wealthy types who want to sail around the world in suites that offer levels of privacy and luxury normally found in a mansion or five-star hotel.

From an elegant penthouse with a shower that extends of the sea to the first ever in-room spa retreat, these are some of the most luxurious cruise ship suites in the world.

Crystal Cruises’ Crystal Penthouse, available on its Serenity and Symphony ships, comes with perks that the average passenger could only dream of.

At 1,345 square feet, the suite has a master bedroom, veranda, living room, dining area and master bathroom with a TV, heated floor, Duravit spa flotation tub looking out over the ocean and a shower with a heated bench.

Butlers are on call 24 hours a day and the occupants are treated to afternoon tea and pre-dinner cocktails and canapes in their suite every day.

They can also dine in private should they choose to avoid other passengers.

Other perks include a welcome bottle of Cristal Champagne, complimentary drinks, garment pressing, unlimited Wi-Fi and internet access, and a private bridge tour.

Royal Caribbean lays claim to the world's six largest cruise ships, so it's no surprise it offers one of the largest luxury suites at sea.

The Royal Loft Suite is a behemoth, spanning two storeys with 1,600 square feet of living space on the main floor and 874 square feet on the balcony.

It is larger than many big-city apartments, with enough room for six guests and a two-storey wall of windows.

The Royal Loft Suite is available on six ships: Allure of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas, Ovation of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas.

New this spring, Royal Caribbean is offering its Royal Suite Class and butlers called 'royal genies', who can unpack or pack luggage and organise every aspect of a passenger's cruise.

Located on the seventh deck, its most unique offering is a private sauna that overlooks the sea.

Set to launch this November, Seven Seas Explorer, from Regent Seven Seas Cruises, has already been billed as the world's most luxurious cruise ship, and its Regent Suite will not disappoint.  

Renderings of the 3,875-square foot suite, located on deck 14, promise floor-to-ceiling windows in the master bedroom, a spacious living room with a custom Steinway Arabesque piano by famed designer Dakota Jackson, black marble bar and dining area, an enormous master bathroom and the first in-room spa retreat at sea.

Passengers can enjoy unobstructed 270-degree views of the sea from a glass enclosed sitting area, called the Vista Garden, over the ship's bow. 

The Regent Suite will have the feel of a Park Avenue apartment thanks to its marble floors, exotic woods, handcrafted furnishings and chandeliers.

From £35,289 per person based on the inaugural 14-night voyage from Haifa to Rome on 2 November.

Cunard Line's Queen Mary 2 is set to undergo a 25-day refurbishment in May and June at the Blohm + Voss shipyard in Hamburg, Germany, and renderings have revealed what its swankiest suites will look like when the vessel returns to the open seas.

All they have to do is ring one of the 24-hour on-call butlers, who can arrange in-suite dining, priority reservations for shore excursions or even pack or unpack their bags.

Measuring more than 2,000 square feet, the suites span the entire beam of the ship and are decorated with furnishings from the Ralph Lauren Home Collection.

Each one boasts a large living room, king-size bed, walk-in closets, indoor and outdoor whirlpool spas and a dramatic entry foyer with a music room. Passengers also have exclusive card-only access to an executive lounge.

Silversea Cruises already offers Owner's Suites on its Spirit cruise ship and it will add more when its newest ship, Silversea Muse, makes its maiden voyage in a year.

On the private veranda, guests can start the day with breakfast or take in amazing sunsets with a flute of chilled Champagne in hand.

Designed in a classic and sophisticated style, the apartments are suited to passengers who want more space and comfort and superior service. The adjoining bedroom has an en-suite bathroom and spectacular sea views. 

The suite measures 1,389 square feet, plus the 129-square foot veranda.
